Nightshift
Ciaran Gallen is a Bournemouth based photographer whose practice is rooted in documentary photography. During his BA Photography studies at Arts University Bournemouth, he developed a body of work centred on observing everyday life and uncovering stories that often go unnoticed. His practice is driven by an interest in capturing fleeting moments, preserving honest experiences, and creating images that reflect the lives of ordinary people and places. Through documentary photography, he seeks to reveal the significance of moments that might otherwise be forgotten.
Throughout his practice, Ciaran has explored a range of personal and social themes. His projects have examined modern relationships in the twenty-first century, the effects of climate change on the British coastline, and the life and memories of his grandfather. His project documenting his grandfather became particularly significant, as it was created during the final months of his life. The work allowed Ciaran to record family memories, uncover untold stories, and preserve a personal history that might otherwise have been lost. More than a photographic project, it became an exploration of family, memory, and legacy.
His final major project, Night Shift, developed from his experience working as a nightclub photographer in Bournemouth. Immersed in the town’s nightlife, he began documenting the fleeting interactions, celebrations, and quiet moments that define youth culture after dark. The project explores how nightclubs and live music venues function as heterotopias—spaces where identity, community, and belonging are temporarily formed. Through a documentary approach, Night Shift captures the atmosphere, emotion, and energy of these environments while preserving moments that are often overlooked or quickly forgotten.
The project also reflects Ciaran’s growing interest in documenting independent spaces and venues, such as small local nightclubs and live music venues that are not part of large commercial chains, at a time when many are disappearing. Inspired by the documentary work of Jeffrey Ladd and the ethos of the Photocopy Club, he presented elements of Night Shift using a RISO printer. The textured and imperfect qualities of the printing process complement the raw atmosphere of the venues he photographs, reinforcing the authenticity of the work while embracing an accessible, independent approach to photography.
Alongside photographing nightlife, Ciaran has developed close relationships with local musicians, artists, and promoters, documenting live performances and the communities that surround them. These experiences have strengthened his interest in the connection between people, music, and place, shaping an ongoing documentary practice that celebrates shared experiences and cultural identity.
