Think For Yourself

Dimitri Basterfield is a UK-based experimental photographer who explores themes of obstruction and perception, with a particular focus on the relationship between viewer, image, and artist.

In a culture where images and advertisements are created for speed, our generation is forced to interpret visual media quickly to adapt to our declining attention spans. Within this context, Basterfield’s work introduces a deliberate pause. Through obstructed or partially concealed subjects, his photographs resist immediate readability and instead encourage viewers to slow down and reconsider how they engage with imagery.

By interrupting the expected flow of visual information, Dimitri challenges the impulse for instant fulfilment, prompting questions about why he interrupts and blocks the viewer from feeding their rapid attention span. This provokes a deeper dive into the audience’s interaction with the artwork, encourages a more reflective experience, and allows individual meaning-making and interpretation.

Dimitri has exhibited in group exhibitions across the south of England, including at AUGER Collective and B.A.D Space, Bournemouth. He will present work in an upcoming exhibition at Copeland Gallery in London. He is currently completing a BA (Hons) in Photography at Art University Bournemouth.
