To, co zostało z Powrotu (What Remained of the Return)
My project, To, co zostało z Powrotu (What Remained of the Return), explores memory, family history, and emotional attachment to place through photography. I photographed locations in Poland that are personally significant to me, including the areas where my cousins and grandparents live, as well as the countryside where my great-grandmother lived. Through revisiting these environments, I wanted to examine how places change over time while still holding traces of personal memory and identity, documenting their history.
I was particularly inspired by Georgs Avetisjans’s exploration of homeland and memory, as well as the observational landscape photography of Jem Southam and Fay Godwin. The emotional atmosphere and inclusion of family members within the work of Sally Mann, and the documentary approach of Andrzej Kramarz. Using minimal editing, quiet compositions, and careful sequencing within a photobook, alongside an A2 print, I aimed to create a reflective narrative about return, remembrance, and my relationship with my hometown.
