Nicola Hornsby is a UK-based photographer, whose practice explores themes of identity through the use of alternative processes and material experimentation. Hornsby is particularly interested in the materiality of the photographic medium, investigating concepts through mixed media explorations. By expanding her artistic practice beyond the borders of traditional photography, she examines the relationship between image, object, and viewer. Her methods encourage a more materially engaged encounter with the work, through the blend of photography and assemblage.
Hornsby’s current project, which will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at the renowned Copeland Gallery London, concerns the notion of constructed representations of identity within contemporary society. The work reflects on how identities are formed, performed, and mediated in an era defined by shared culture, digital circulation, and collective visual language. By incorporating physical objects in conjunction with relevant imagery, Hornsby constructs layered personas that indicate the complexities and contradictions of individual identity today.
Her work has previously been exhibited at both the BAD space Bournemouth and Auger Gallery Bournemouth, where audiences experienced her material explorations and developments.
